The Field
A 200 yard walk from my home through the woods takes me to an abandoned farm field that at least temporarily is returning to nature. In southern Rensselaer county where I live the farms are long gone and the area is slowly evolving into suburbia. Walking the field and observing the seasonal changes is a relaxing yet bittersweet pasttime. The sound of the redwing blackbirds shouting at me as I walk too close to their nests is overlaid with the sound of construction equipment beaping as it backs up on the adjacent hillside. The return to nature will be brief and the transition to suburbia is as inevitable as the change of seasons.
